Nevada Colleges & Universities

Nevada may be famous for gambling casinos, but it's also the home of several first-rate colleges and universities. The largest is the University of Nevada, Reno. The university's nine colleges offer undergraduate and graduated degrees in the humanities, social sciences, sciences, technology, engineering, mathematics, and medicine. Other areas of study include business, education, engineering, public policy, and social work. The University of Nevada, Reno got its start in 1874 under the name the University Preparatory School and was based in Elko, Nevada. Today, it is one of eight institutions within the Nevada System of Higher Education. Nine colleges offer undergraduate and graduated degrees in the humanities, social sciences, sciences, technology, engineering, mathematics, and medicine. Other areas of study include business, education, engineering, public policy, and social work. In 2008, there were nearly 17,000 students enrolled at the University of Nevada, Reno, which features two campuses in the scenic Sierra Nevada foothills, just a short drive from the California border.
